IMHO, personal opinion this...but...the Fashion Statement Crowd drives OEM marketing to internally push for whatever LAGs and SOS is out there (latest and greatest/Shining Object, syndromes)
CUVs are more car than trucks, as they are derived from car platforms. Therefore more MPG and handling like cars
SUVs are more truck than cars (though the LAGs and SOS folks are driving more and more car attributes than ever before) and will have less MPG and less handling than cars...more truck attributes
My mini van is a Honda Odyssey. The Honda Pilot uses that platform with the attendant 'utility vehicle' attributes, but they have about the same MPG and handling...with the HP advantage to the CUV Pilot, which costs more than the same optioned Odyssey
Toyota Highlander is derived from the Sienna mini van and likewise the CUV Highlander has more HP than the Mini Van it uses the platform from
Ditto the Toyota RAV4 CUV, it is a Corolla based platform and more car than SUV
Ditto the Honda Civic based CUV and all the other CUV's (most don't know the difference between a CUV and SUV)
My 2000 Odyssey, bought used, is getting to the point am considering something to replace it. A sedan would be 1st choice (a Honda Accord Hybrid), but would miss the room of a mini van. A Pilot CUV is nice, but the new Odyssey has more room than the Pilot and costs less. That is the direction I'm leaning for now.
The Odyssey is NOT a truck, so the design margins are in the car class and not worthy of spending much to keep it running...like a truck which would be rebuild-able IMHO....like my 1996 K3500, 7.4L Suburban WILL be rebuild soon
