Sedans are worthless as far as I'm concerned. They have literally no advantages compared to an equivalent wagon and are severely hampered in cargo carrying ability.
Wagons are a great option. Even better if you get an AWD version, at least where we live. There are few very models available, though, and they're all pretty limited in interior space.
Crossovers, which I used to snub my nose at, are actually a really good option for a lot of people. You get a little reasonable ground clearance, AWD, decent mileage especially on more recent models, car-like handling coupled with a comfortable upright seating position, and the ability to up-size beyond the space you could get in a wagon. Obviously not a great choice for towing or heavy offroad use but those aren't concerns for most people, and they can tow smaller loads and get down fairly rough roads in a pinch.
Minivans are the overlooked practical option. Most don't offer AWD but they are ideal family movers that generally get better mileage than their crossover cousins.
