The pivot to SUVs and Pickup trucks is driven by the consumer. The manufacturers would build 10 million Edsels if that is what would sell. The fact is if US consumer wants SUVs, the US consumer will get SUVs. With many SUVs now meeting or exceeding 30 MPG a driver driving 15000 miles a year only uses 500 gallons of fuel a year. Should gas prices rise a dollar a gallon, that is less than $10.00 a week which is less than two Starbuck's. For the vast majority of Americans, fuel prices are not high on their worry list.
