You can buy a 2010 GM 1-ton van with 6.0L/6-spd/3.42 for less than any similar mileage diesel Excursion 2000-2005. You are correct that the 3/4 ton SUVs cost a premium (I'd say more like double for like condition).

GM 6.0L/6-sp is what I recommend. Great power for towing up to about 10k pounds. Reliable, inexpensive. We love our Suburban which uses the same drivetrain except 3.73 gear.
