Love to hook one up to my LX470 and get a feel for what its going to be like.
I know MPG is going to drop below 10, just wondering about the power to pull
without damaging the Engine and Transmission.
We just returned from a week in the Texas Hill Country (Bandera was our base for folks who know the area). And yes, to echo what I said earlier and what you are saying now, you do need to get a feel for the towing experience with your LX470. Hope you can work that out.
Earlier in offering specifications for your Lexus (wanting to compare to the Ridgeline), I cannot recall if you mentioned your axle ratio. That is also an important component in the towing experience. It affects mileage, among other things, since you mentioned that. The final drive for our Ridgeline"s AWD system is 4.52:1. To use our past week's experience for context, our westbound trip was a total of 254.8 miles from our driveway in Houston to Antler Oaks RV Lodge in Bandera. Our fuel consumption was a flat 10.0 MPG. Coming back home basically retracing our route our mileage was 252.7, and that yielded 9.1 MPG. The main difference? We had 15-17 MPH winds from the NNE all the way home. Our trailer's weight on the way back was probably around 4575 lbs. since we had used up some groceries during our stay.
So expectations for MPG should be limited - unless you have a diesel of some kind. The more important factors are safety, stability and being able to stop the rig. You need to feel comfortable and confident as you tow. Otherwise, you will get to your destination frazzled, tired and grumpy. Not the kind of camping experience you would want.
Or, here in our part of Texas, take a rest stop at a Buccee's, fuel up and grab a snack . . . I just had to have some dark chocolate covered almonds to munch on. :B
