As a point of comparison I typically see 12+ miles to the US gallon towing our 2014 FE 192RBS with our 2005 5.3L V8 Chevy Avalanche. Worst case, I don't recall ever seeing anything under 10 mpg so even with a non-tow friendly 3.42 axle ratio it's never stressed, 'though I do always tow in 3rd with Tow / Haul engaged. A larger vehicle doesn't always mean worse fuel mileage returns. ;)
Yes, exactly my point for context. One of the biggest gripes about the Gen 1 Ridgeline like ours was its less than satisfactory MPG. For years Ridge owners had complained to Honda about fuel consumption. So the OP's concerns about a lower powered vehicle not returning great mileage while towing is our experience. Like him, we were not in a position to get a new tow vehicle, and we enjoy great stability but not great fuel mileage.
Maybe a year from now we will get our next tow vehicle. Might be the Gen 2 Ridgeline since it is getting great reviews and reports on towing - including for trailers the size of ours. Or we might move to one of the great 1/2 ton options out there . . . just want to be sure I can easily garage the thing!
