BTW, I got on the Lexus GX470 forums and I read about
folks towing 25 foot Air Streams and ones weighing 6,000 lbs.
I guess they are keying on just the "Max Tow Capacity" numbers.
One fellow mentioned he was pulling a 7,000 lb trailer with
his GX470. The GX470 is smaller than the LX470.
CW, I would be very cautious about taking any advice from the Airstream forum ( I know you said the Lexus form, but I thought that might send you on a search to the Airstream forum ). There are some sharp guys over there.....but.....there are a few folks over there that have some really crazy setups, like 34' triple axle trailers being pulled by front wheel drive sedans and such.
There's two guys in particular that post a lot about how great it is to set up a unibody, independent rear suspension car for towing because they state those are clearly superior designs. Oddly, they both choose full size pickups for their own tow vehicles.
Out here in the real world where people actually use their Airstreams, I have observed that nearly all of them are being towed by nicely adequate tow vehicles.
I know you're trying to make your Lexus work for this, but honestly, most folks use pickups for tow vehicles. Pickups have sturdy ladder frames, a stout rear axle design, robust drivelines and cooling systems, etc. In other words, they are designed for job of carrying and towing a load. If you buy a travel trailer, there is a good likelihood you will eventually settle on buying a truck. And you'll love it.
That's my two cents.
