servicing the generator

I've got a 2012 Arctic Fox 1150 with the Onan generator.
I've already changed the oil, no problem.
Yesterday though, I thought I'd check the spark plug and after reading the manual I learned that there is a "port" or hole in the bottom front that's supposed to allow you to remove it from the bottom.
The problem is that that hole is angled in such a way that it's literally "looking" at the rear wall of the camper.
There is NO way to get to the plug. Even with a knuckle type socket wrench.
I ended up having to literally remove the bolts holding the generator, remove the muffler and use a bottle jack and a board to raise it up high enough that it cleared the lip of the rear access hatch.
There's GOT to be a better way.

Am I missing something here or is that what others have encountered?
  • So you have 4 bolts that hold the 2500 into that hang down holder, I was able to take the front ones out and loosen up the back ones and drop the front down enough to be able to squeeze a socket up and in to get the plug out. Wasn't pretty and I ended up dropping the whole unit after to check other issues, but it can be done. Hopefully you got it all cleaned up while you had it dropped.

I have a lance so it might be different, the bottom to mine is open.
  • thanks Mellow, so you were able to drop the unit down? I don't think mine would do that, but I'll check.
