Don't be fooled by the brochure weights. They are for a base trailer with no options. The actual weights can be several hundred pounds more. If the trailer is on the lot get the actual weight from the factory sticker. ( usually on the screen door or inside a cabinet.
The hitch weight will also be several hundred pounds heavier than listed. A safe bet is to figure a minimum 13% of your calculated loaded weight. Add in the weight of the hitch and you'll be pushing 1000lbs. That'll only leave you 400lbs of payload for all the passengers and anything you may put in the bed of the truck. The door sticker is the actual payload for your truck.
Don't forget that the kids won't get any lighter. Your husband is right to be concerned. I was in a similar situation and although the truck towed it ok, we now have a 3/4 ton truck to tow.
