And the Walmart manager obviously knows about how Shell packages their oil. I wonder what else he'll say that he actually knows nothing about.

Even if they were packaged "by weight" - the weight of that oil is easily calculated.

Thing is, unlike breakfast cereals and potato chips where the package is also filled by weight and not volume. The weight and volume of oil are directly proportionate to one another. The oil doesn't "settle" in the container.

  • No matter what the jugs might say on the side, mine have ALWAYS come out right on the engine's dipstick.

I HIGHLY doubt your jugs are under-filled. If anything I would suspect a switch to lighter/thinner plastic in the jug is allowing it to bow out more then they used to, thus showing a low reading on the built in scale.
  • I have 3 gal out in the garage and there all full they have a big boo boo on there hands
  • I would measure the volume and if not correct -complain.
The scale on jugs is for orientation only and I doubt it is calibrated.
You squeeze sides of the jugs and it will show 4.5 quarts.
  • The containers oil are sold in are ALWAYS labeled in gallons, quarts, liters, etc. which are VOLUME measurements.

If you buy a jug that is marked "1 US Gallon" it better have four quarts in it.

The WalMart super may in fact be correct about how the jugs are filled (by weight) but even if true, the filling machine is out of adjustment if it's only filling them to the 3-1/2 qt. line.

    :):)
  • The "Jugs" I bought from Autozone are all labeled as 2.5 gallon
  • That sucks. Means you have to buy a extra qt. or two to fill the engine properly. :(
