Short vs. Long Bed F350 SRW

Hello we are going to be purchasing a 38' 5th. wheel and most likely will be purchasing a new or near new F350 SRW. I was wondering those with the short beds are you happy with the ride and handling of the truck, would really like to keep it shorter and not another dually. Thanks for the help.
  • Short beds work very well for everyday driving, especially if you have a true 4 door. I have that for my 09 GMC HD and love it. That being said, I also have an 69 C10 long bed, love that truck. Long bed so easy to load everything I need, especially kayaks when I hit the river. So both have there advantages. It's really up to you, drive both and see what is easier to live with day by day and which is easier for you to park. U will probably receive as many answers as when a someone ask: 4 wheel drive or 2... So be prepared to read through some good advice. Good luck on your decision !
  • Why would anyone want a short bed truck when they make 8 foot beds ? Never could understand that. Long bed looks better !! Hauls 8' loads, rides better. My wife has been driving long bed F 350's for 20 years..... Come on you can do it.....lol
  • Tow a 39'4" 16K 5th wheel with a 3500 SRW. Towed in wind as Wadcutter note without an issue.

  • Wadcutter very interesting about your 7.3 that is what I own now. F350 7.3 dually and it has been a great truck just wanted a little more options. I like the idea of a newer short bed just that they turn so much quicker. Thanks for the replies looking forward to hearing more.
  • I have towed with both and I much prefer the long bed SRW. I towed a 40 ft 5th w
with a F250 long bed for one summer. No problems other than I would have been better of with a DRW
  • Either will work. The big issue for me is bed storage. I usually carry a good bit of stuff up ahead of the hitch. With a short bed that storage space is gone. BTW I also have a folding bed cover that protects stuff up front when traveling, and covers the hitch when not.
  • I really like my short bed and it works well as a daily driver. A long bed would be workable but more of a hassle to park, and I do frequent some parking garages that wouldn't work very well with a long bed. Either would fit in my garage at home but a short bed is an easier fit. Both short beds and long beds involve compromises, they're just a bit different.

As long as you have enough axle and tire capacity a newer SRW should work just fine for you.
  • I'm pulling a 40 ft Big Country 5er with a F-350 SRW 4X4, extended cab, 8 ft bed, 6.7 diesel. Handles great. Not a problem. I've pulled it on flat grounds and thru the CO Rockies and during some strong winds, head wind, tail wind and side wind. Never felt the need for a DRW. The SRW handled it fine.
Prior to this F-350 I pulled it with F-350, SRW 4X4, 4 door, 8 ft bed, 7.3 diesel. Rode great and never a problem pulling the 5er.
Major difference between the 2 trucks was getting around town. The 4 dr 8 ft bed took forever to make a U turn where the extended cab turns sharper. Don't really notice any difference pulling the 5er tho as I haven't needed to do that sharp of a U turn with either while pulling.
The SRW is a lot nicer getting around towns, parking, or hitting tight spots. The dually isn't that much wider but it's surprising just that little bit makes a major difference getting around. I've had my last dually. SRW for me.
  • That a long and I assume a heavy trailer I think a DRW long bed will be better. The ride will be better with long bed.
