Unfortunately, there is a lack of large industrial gas engines that could power such fire equipment. So they are stuck with these non-working diesels. :(
I think a number of decades ago there used to be large displacement gas truck engines that I believe may have powered fire truck engines. The name Hall-Scott rings a bell.
But diesel engines have pretty well taken over the MDT and HDT truck engines.
Options to diesel power for HDT's, seem to be few.
I recall reading, a few years ago about compressed gas being considered an option for highway transport, class 8 trucks.
But I haven't heard anything lately. Think the availability of compressed gas filling stations for highway tractor use, was too limited to make this a viable option.
I also recall reading about (Pop Mechanics I think) a possible development of a gas-electric class 8 powered trucks. If I recall the truck would have an industrial version of the Chevy 4300 Vortec V6 engine...which would be used to charge batteries...the battery power would power the class 8 trucks. Think the industrial vortec engine would run at a constant speed, but I could be wrong.
Haven't heard anything lately about this.
