I agree that compressed natural gas would be a very good way to go for fire departments, utility companies and local trucking companies, who can fill their rigs at their own private filling stations. Natural gas is far less expensive than gasoline, diesel or propane.
Infrastructure is indeed the problem for over the road trucking companies to use natural gas. If many of them got together and worked with the major truck stop companies, a natural gas infrastructure could be built, without the help of Uncle Sam. This could then give rise to greater use of natural gas for non-commercial vehicles, since they could fill up at truck stops too. Once a demand for natural gas filling stations starts, the government may finally jump in and help fund nationwide infrastructure for it, as they have for other alternative fuels and electric charging.
Since the US has great natural gas reserves, fuel independence from the mid-East could indeed happen, if we the people and our government embrace natural gas as a national fuel for vehicular and other (light rail) transport. :)
Things seem to be starting to happen. Interesting article about Canadian long haul trucking firm, using LNG.
Liquified Natural Gas - long haul truckingI don't know what the future holds, but it looks like there are some interesting developments.
