1) Doing a delete is illegal. Enforcement may be sparse to non-existent in most of the country, but if you're a business owner, odds of getting reported and fined became much higher.
2) Ford has a "no-touch" policy on trucks that are deleted. Dealers are not so supposed to perform any warranty work on a deleted truck. Furthermore, deleting the truck requires a programming. There's no way to remove the "bread-crumbs" left behind, even if you restore to stock, which Ford can use to deny powertrain warranty claims.
3) The stock 6.7L makes almost double to the HP and torque of a the 7.3L. When you say your son's truck reminds you of the 7.3, are you saying it feels slower? And noisier? Besides purchase repair costs, I see zero advantages of a 7.3L over a 6.7L...
Myself, I see lots of advantages in a 7.3 because I have one. No payment book is the big advantage, better fuel mileage is another. I get 18 empty and 15 pulling. My 7.3 has all the right parts inside like forged connecting rods and head bolts that don't stretch plus you can actually fix it because it's OBS so the motor is exposed instead of tucked under the cowl. The big advantage for me (besides it's been paid for, for 13 years now is, no emissions hardware at all. Nothing, not even crank case blowby into the turbo, it has a road draft tube.
I just had it in to the dealer (where I bought it new) for a recall update and not only did they have no issue working on it, they took pictures of it to hang on the wall. It has no corrosion whatsoever, basically in pristine condition, and will stay that way. It's stone reliable and it smokes when I press on the fuel pedal plus it has that sweet (to me) diesel clatter and with a straight exhaust, the turbo whistles all the time...Music to my ears.
The motor is all stock except for a Banks Quick Spool turbine housing and turbo back 5" exhaust, K&N free flow tuned intake with Riff-Raff boots.
I expect the truck will outlive me. Great truck and yes, it's a 4x4 crew cab long bed with a real transfer case **** lever on the floor and manual hubs.
Just fine with me. I do use DEF for something however. I spray DEF on my hayfields as liquid fertilizer. Works well for that.
My 2 cents plus some...
