Should I use cruise control while towing a travel trailer

Should I use cruise control while towing a travel trailer?

Thank you,
Tom

  • Are you smarter than the tow vehicle? Are you willing to do the work necessary to save a little fuel? Does your tow vehicle downshift more often than you like to hear? Hilly country, I do the driving, in the flats I let her cruise.
  • As noted, some tow vehicles may really race the engine trying to keep up using cruise control (my hemi did this). My 12 ram diesel does an awesome job with cruise and the exhaust brake activated. Keeps me from busting speed limits and better mileage. Tow haul on, exhaust brake on...the transmission does all the work for me.

  • Depends on your tow vehicle. If it has the power to maintain speed without up/down shifting on every slight incline, then go for it. Mine has no problem at all. But it is an F350 6.7 diesel towing a 12,000 lb 5er. And the tow/haul feature helps prevent unnecessary up/down shifting.
  • ALL THE TIME.
It's so much easier when you only need to worry about your mirrors and steering.

My owner's manual warns to to use if speed drops more than 10mph/16kph. It took some time to establish the ideal setting, which for me is 98kmh in 100kmh zones or 84 kmh on secondary roads.
  • I use cruise but the answer for you could be relative to your rig. My old tow vehicle could not maintain speed in cruise control.
  • I do, no reason not to. and with the newer cruise controls, our's also works on downhills, so no need to hit the brakes to turn on the exhaust brake. just let cruise do it's job.

I turn it off when we hit roads with lots of curves that one needs to slow down for, other than that, it's cruise all the way.
  • I use it but definitely see a decrease in fuel efficiency.

  • I use it on my truck/camper combination and my Jeep/smaller camper combination. No problems...so far.
  • Why NOT?

I tow 14K 5th wheel and use 'cruise control' unless on hilly country roads

I also use 'tow/haul' mode with and w/o cruise
