Alko and Lippert manuals say to adjust manual brakes to approximately 1 turn of looseness. Never had one heat up when adjusted to one turn, and I check regularly with an infrared gun. Alko service told me too loose an adjustment could cause brakes to grab (problem that I was having at the time). They actually said looseness was more likely than too tight to cause grabbing. Lippert manual says that it takes 40 application of brakes before they are burnished in. They (and Dexter) recommend full application of the trailer brakes only from 40 mph down to 20 mph to burnish the brakes. After fully burnished in the brakes will need adjusted to tighten them up.
