From the photos it looks as if there is a closet right next to the shower? If all else is unsuccessful, can you careful cut an access hole in the closet wall and then make a decent looking panel to cover the hole?
If a leak happened once then it could happen again and this permanent access panel will allow for future inspection and maintenance.
I checked closet first. Paneled wall not removable. Will check closet floor board to see if I can remove it. Going to purchase the longest basin wrench I can find tomorrow too. Cutting wall panel might be a good idea. If hot water fitting is not loose will I nee to replace whole shower fixture?
