Silly me....winterizing

So, I'm one of those people who reads instructions and then follows them....usually to a T and I set about winterizing the AF990 yesterday as I didn't plan on using it for about a month or so and it's getting down to freezing at night (has been for a while now but I left heat on and a little electric heater on too).

Since I didn't winterize my last camper (only had it through the warm months) and before that the tent trailer was easy enough as I just drained the lines and left it (which worked fine until the year it got really cold and we were camping and lost the P Trap).

So I first tried blowing out the lines like I do at our cabin to see how well it worked in the camper. Seemed fine. Then decided to go through it all and truly winterize so I knew how to do it and picked up some RV antifreeze.

I went through the motion right to the hot water heater and there it said, and I quote (ok paraphrase): "drain the hot water heater by removing the drain plug at the bottom of the heater and by opening the relief valve.

So, you guessed it, I removed the drain plug (which is also the rod) and on the last turn it shot out like a bullet and hosed me down like a firehose at which time I went "DUH!" and opened the relief valve and let the remaining pressure out.

Darn it! I just wasn't thinking and well, I did follow the instructions in order....DOH! Open the darn pressure relief valve FIRST.

Oh well, got it all done with RV antifreeze and even remembered the shower head and the outside shower :D

After changing out of my wet shirt of course LOL
  • Actually, not all bad. Stand to one side when it comes out. I do that every fall. The rushing water cleans the anode crud out of the tank.

Thanks Gang :) and yes it comes out like a shot!

Another thing plagued me a little too: to shut off 12v power you have to do so under the step below the cab over....which can't be done with the slide in. So, if I understand how this works you open the slide, go in and shut off 12v power and then what? Crank the slide closed by hand? Or will it work on shore power alone?
  • Could be worse. You could've left the thermostat on so the tank was full of piping hot water.
  • Add to your steps, or change the order a bit ...

    Turn off water pump.

Then turn on the hot water faucet at the sink until all pressure is off.

Then drain water heater. The anode rod won't be under pressure.

Then by-pass the water heater for winterizing.

Then blow or pump the pink.

    Good luck next year!

Edit: And oh.... when all done, put the anode rod back in the water heater so the threads of the rod and the threads of the tank won't rust up over the winter months. (and they will if you don't put it back in). I always leave a note on the wall by the electric switch for the for the water heater that the water heater is drained, do not turn on the electric until water heater is refilled.)

Don't ask why I do this extra step now!
