Perrysburg Dodgeboy said it right and he's right on. The ripple effect of not helping GM and Chrysler would have been so catastrophic with many millions of jobs, homes, suppliers, stores, schools, etc closed or abondoned and would have turned a serious recession into a deep depression. A drastic drop in tax revenue for local schools that meant fast closures and far less money spent in stores etc and so many would have close. No jobs, no income or taxes withheld! There would be such a drop in all tax revenue to the Fed Gov, State, and local that even public assistance to the millions affected wouldn't have been remotely possible. A depression so deep the nation's economy would likely not have survived at all.
After the banking industry turned their back on GM and Chrysler, there was no other option but a forced bailout or the certain failed economy. The mandated new EPA regulations among many others and the extreme high costs of doing business with much of it due to built up legacy costs from several previous generations had come to a head and was no longer sustainable. It was the same as burning a candle from both ends and the flames had finally reached the center! The candle is GONE!
