I had something like that on my 06 Explorer. I thought my front differential is going bad because the noise was coming from there.
$ 13 u-joint on the front driveshaft was the problem and it made it sound like the whole differential was making noise. There was no play in it but one of the 4 caps on the u-joint was seized.
