I pulled the transfer case last night and pulled the rear half to see if I did anything wrong. The fluid smelled burned, but there was no metal and the only thing I found was the output shaft bushing was toast. There was a piece of silicone in the weep hole that lubes it. There is heat marks on the driveshaft yoke, but no grooves. I don't think that would be the only cause of such a load whine, but who knows. It is going to the shop to be checked out.
