Silverton, Colorado Trip - 2013

We spent a couple of weeks Campin’/Jeepin’ in the Silverton, Colorado area a few weeks back. Stayed at the Silver Summit RV Park. Drove out with four other families we know from this area. Its about 1,500 miles from North Alabama to Silverton. Some folks spent a day riding the steam train and another day visiting Mesa Verde Nat Park. Weather was better than expected and the scenery was exceptional as always. Saw bear, bighorn, elk, moose, mule deer, etc.

  • Brad,
Very nice pix of your trip. BTW, "some of the trails we rode"?
Are there any left? I recognize most of the locations. They look almost exactly the same as they did it 1971. Except in June of that year there was still lots of snow blocking some of the passes as the county bulldozer had not cleared the way. At that time the county fathers did not grasp the boon to the local economy the 4x4 tourists would have. They clear it earlier now.
Looks like there was a lot of precip this summer as the vegetation in the high reaches is still green. My first trip of many to those locales was in 1971 with a pregnant wife, a 3 year old, in a 1966 FJ40 Land Cruiser rag top pulling a jeep trailer. My how time flies. The pregnancy developed into my daughter Julie (41), and the 3 year old is now Matt @ 45, who, separately gifted us the three grand kids you see in my T.R. called, "Fordyce Foray".
    regards, as always, jefe
