I've had 3 dual axle TT and currently own a single axle toy hauler (20ft);
Prefer the single axle - much more maneuverable in tight spots (like some
gas stations); I can get into really tight sites in public campgrounds. Reversing into sites is much easier.
Weighs about 4,500 lbs loaded and tows like a dream with a Express 6.0 Van.
I just came back from a 5,000 mile trip to Big Bend - worked out great; in 30
years of towing, I've never had a blow out or bad bearing but then I keep up
with the maintenance and check tires/bearings regularly.
I have thought of a small single axle TH for overnight trips as well. One advantage I could see is small single axle trailer's usually have 15" tires where small duel axle trailer's have 13" tires. Off road I would think the larger tires would be better. I also know you can get 15" tires in load range (E) where 13" is usually (C or D).
If you look at early small trailers just about all from the 50's and 60's had single axles. Add they only had bias ply tires as well and seemed to have worked fine for years.
I have never owned a single axle trailer other then boat trailers. Never had a tire failure or bearing failure but was diligent on maintenance and tire replacement.
