Single or Double Axle?

Thinking of getting a TT after many years in a 21' Class C.

Pretty sure I understand the general differences but not having pulled one I'd like some opinions/feedback.

Can a single be just fine or would some of you just not even consider it? Why?

I might add that we haven't gone the TT route before because we like to get off the beaten path. In fact campgrounds are not on our list of favorite places.

thanks-

  • Singles probably seem just fine until you have a blowout or bearing problem. When we had a single, we had a bearing failure in Page, Az. Had to limp into a parking lot, nearly destroying the axle and spent the weekend waiting for shops to open. It could have been a very ugly situation. I felt much more confidence with a dual axle. Add to that, more CCC and extra stability when towing and at a camp site.

All that said, there are tons of single axle trailers on the roads that aren't having failures.
  • A single is just fine. We had a 17' single axle for 10 years. Took it all over the western US. Never a problem. One thing you might read is that dual axle trailers bounce less. That may only be because they are generally a bit heavier.

One big advantage to dual axles on a smaller in general is that they allow more cargo capacity. Not always the case though.
