Size allowed at parks

Just a quick question..
Went to the national parks website they say that as rule of thumb most parks allow up 27 foot trailer....
So my question is.. Is that the size of the box? Or up to the hitch?

Thnx :-D
  • The only park I've ever heard of measuring a rig and ordering a camper to pull out because his rig was longer than the listed limit even though it fit in the spot is Mount Rainier.

Bryce in Utah will also measure if it looks close to the max.
  • I camp at a ton of PA State Parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. My hybrid barely fits. Its a 21ft and change box, 3 ft hitch, 25'ft overall. I have not had to park the truck on other sites but have wedged it in front perpendicular to the hitch.
  • I have not found it much of a problem in many of the Army Corps Campgrounds or the State Park Campgrounds in the Middle TN area. Many of our older campgrounds are being upgraded to standards. Our Puma 25RS is about 25 feet but from the tip of the tongue to the spare tire it measures 30 feet. It is also good to know your overall height to the top of the AC.
  • I'm not sure why box size would be an important consideration at all when determining if a rig will fit in a camp site. It would seem to me that the hitch to bumper length would be the number that is needed.

But who knows, especially when it comes to gov't entities. I've noted that some places include tow vehicle in rig length, some don't. You can't count on any consistency form place to place.
