Having never owned a trailer with a slide out I have a few questions. I know the purpose of the slideout awning. It's to keep leaves, twigs etc off the slide out. If a trailer mfg doesn't include an awning or list it as an option can the dealer add one? If you don't have an awning and it's raining the morning you need to depart do you retract the slide and then wipe the top of the slide down from inside the RV to get the water off the sides and top of the slide? I guess wiping the side down would happen if you even had a awning cover. Can someone please educate me on proper closure of the slide and what needs to be done if you have the awning vs if you don't?

Usually they can. We had our dealer add one to our current TT. They're not cheap; IIRC it cost about $700+ installed.

If it is raining when you bring your slides in the seals will remove most of the water as the slide is brought in. If it is really wet, I may then place an old towel on each end of the slide room to absorb any water that may run down while traveling. Just remember to remove the towel when you get home or before you put the slide out again. I have also traveled with the tops wet without a towel in place and found no issues. I just like the towels for the "in case".

Dealers can install an awning slide, or you can install it yourself, it isn't really all that difficult.If you close a slide with a topper while it's raining you'll have to remember to open the slide back up later to allow it to dry to prevent mildew.There are pros and cons to having them as well as not having them.

I live and camp in a very rainy climate. Have wondered the same thing but never got around to wiping down the top of the slide when I bring it in. I never find evidence of water inside the trailer so I guess the rubber gaskets are doing their job. The top of the slide is damp, but it has never been a problem.

I don't much care what you found on line, we have that access too and we have the catalogs which weren't much help to us either, so we just went to the dealer, picked up the PHONE and talked to a real live customer service person and got exactly what we needed.

I have no doubt you bought one, but I don’t know where… what does seem to be true is you bought an obsolete out of production awning… one that I don’t think the mfg. supports any longer…

I am glad you got what you wanted and glad you are happy with it because that is all that counts…

So again I say it is discontinued and no longer being produced… I HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU CAN FIND A LEFTOVER OR SECURE PARTS FOR IT IF IT SI DAMAGED, BUT MAYBE, WE HAVE SEEN REPORTS THAT YOU CAN…

Larry, not sure if bumpy's reason is the same as mine but tying the edge of the slide topper to the ground will stretch the edge of the slide topper even if the tension in the line is low since the wind will increase the tension with each gust. Using a deflapper on an awning with arms at the side (as in a manual awning) does not cause this stretching as easily since the pull is horizontal and the distance to the point of fixity is shorter.

yep, the deflappers I had/have clamp to the fabric and to the side bars, my slide awnings had no side bar to clamp them to. I never said you couldn't tie/scotch tape/ staple the slide awning down to the slide.

Accessability when a slide is close is a whole other issue and to be honest I wouldn't have a trailer that was basically non functional with the slide(s) in. It might be difficult, but lack of access to things like the stove, refer, bath and someplace to sleep would be non starters for me in selecting an RV.

Some trailers we've seen, you couldn't really close the slide when things got windy without having to climb over stuff to get to the john. But maybe just retracting it half way would help if you didn't have a de-flapper set up.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, folks. We'll order the topper on our next trailer with a slide.

while parked in galveston at Dellanarva (sp?) campground on the gulf with horrible winds, yes, my bedroom awning was "flapping" and I feared it would get torn off. I retracted the slide for the night. no big deal, I wouldn't leave my window awnings out in that mess either.
