I've had slides with and without toppers and prefer having one. We camp where there are plenty of leaves or pine needles and I always had to climb a ladder to sweep the slide before retracting. I also camp in winter conditions - I never had issues with snow packing in between the slide and topper, but I did have problems with ice forming on my slide without a topper. If you camp in an open area like desert or beach, you can position your TC so the topper does not catch wind. As stated before, in extremely warm weather, the topper acts like a shade and the slide does not get as hot.
