Slideout cover questions.

Hey guys, I was cleaning the covers over the slideouts and noticed a lot of sun damage to the area that is always exposed to the sun. It is very crunchy and there are small cracks in the material. Is there anything to seal and fill the material to make it last longer and does anyone use some kind of cover to protect them? I’m looking into a carport but having a tough time getting an answer on if they are legal for our property. Thanks
  • I used some awning tape on a fellows RV last week to fix a few things (body cracks). I think it would do a pretty good job of extending the life of your awning. It is surprisingly strong and sticky. I have no idea how long it will last but it seems like good stuff.
  • High - quality awnings come with factory metal covers.
I heard eternabond is good to apply on top of the rolled awning, if you can stand cosmetics.
With manufactured carports, better get one with 80 mph wind rating.

I haven't seen them on slide toppers but awning are available that have an articulated metal piece for the first 3/4 of a turn. This protects the fabric more completely when rolled up. I don't know why it couldn't be used for a slide topper.

Dometic makes covers with the metal cover.
  • I use Aerospace 303 Protectant on my slide toppers.. It is a sun block to stop the UV from drying out the fabric... Works great.

I also use that same stuff on anything that is sun exposed, including the black AC shrouds . .
  • Don't know how old your RV is but after about 10 years we had our slide cover replaced.

No answers on the adding longevity issue but interested.

With a long awning and 3 slide toppers I have been mulling over options including a steel carport.

These seem like possibility at least as far as awning protection.

Thinking that some sort of inexpensive manufaturered lightweight pvc pipe cut lengthwise could be a cheap way to protect the awning while stored.
  • As for your car port, go apply for a building permit and you'll find out.
