No answers on the adding longevity issue but interested.
With a long awning and 3 slide toppers I have been mulling over options including a steel carport.
These seem like possibility at least as far as awning protection.

Thinking that some sort of inexpensive manufaturered lightweight pvc pipe cut lengthwise could be a cheap way to protect the awning while stored.
