Sliding panel in screen door

I searched for an answer but couldn't find what I was looking. I know I've seen some bodies modification to keep those little sliding panels in your screen door from popping out. Does anybody remember what it was? Ours are always falling out of the tracks when you are trying to slide them open so you can open the screen door. Thanks!

  • On our camper I used the bare ground wire from a piece of 14-2 romex electrical cable and just laid it in the channel. Has worked fine for 3 years now.
  • Our new TT had the panel missing but I missed it in the PDI. I got a piece of .100" plastic and a drawer pull from Lowes and cut my own replacement. I was able to bow the plastic enough to pop it in place. DW likes it better than the opaque panel on our old Travelstar.
Hint - sandwich the panel between 2 pieces of wood when you drill a hole in it, otherwise the plastic will crack.

I guess ROO are good in one field !!!!! :B
  • An old trick that I had heard and then tried is to lay a piece of the plastic string trimmer line in the bottom channel. It raises the panel up just enough (depending on what thickness line) to keep it in place. It's not perfect, but does seem to work...only pops out once in a while now. I also added a Camco RV Screen Door Opener to eliminate the need to constantly slide the panel. It seems to work well also.
  • We also put in the clear Camco screen door slides and a little gadget door opener so you don't have to slide to open, except when the outside door is shut. Our son bought a new TT and the slide on it has a built in "knob" that opens the screen w/o sliding the door. We love the crossbar and bought our son one for his first TT and now a new one for his new TT. Well worth the few $$$$.
  • When my panel broke last year, I replaced it with the clear Camco. I've had no problem with the new one. The old one had become warped and very brittle over the years, and I think the warpage was why it fell out a lot...While I was at it, I also installed the screen door opener and cross bar, both by Camco.

  • I just replaced my white plastic original with a clear one by Camco. It works okay but it's really no more sturdy or less likely to fall out then the original. It also does not seal as well as the white one did. So don't bother going this route if a better fit and function are your goals. We don't have kids that travel with us so falling out is kind of a rare occurrence.
  • Our previous HTT (Travelstar)had that flimsy sliding panel. The HTT we own now (Palomino) has a clear plexiglass which is more rigid.
If you can get one and cut it to size, it should fix the problem.

  • Funny you mention that!

My new to me TT was missing the panel when I got it.

Amongst my tools and equipment on my truck is a portable aluminum brake. And a roll of coil. and the tools needed for the task.

I took a few critical measurements and laid out the piece of metal, cut it, folded a few hems here and there, a little measuring, a bit of trimming to suit and voila! On really nifty sheet aluminum sliding panel that works far better than the plastic factory one.

I had to partly disassemble the screen door to get the thing in there, but it works like a charm!

Now here is the kicker - I had just bought the TT and was on it's maiden voyage. I was going through the drawers of misc. stuff left behind from the previous owner and found this curious looking square black thing in one of the drawers. I scratched my head, wondering what it was and put it back in the drawer.....

The next day when I was marveling over my handiwork, I suddenly realized what the little black plastic thing was!! After all that work making a new one.

But I came to realize why it resided in a drawer instead of on the screen. It was too small and fell out.

Gee, maybe I should mass produce them and give them away to folks like you!!

Sorry OP, I realize this does not answer your question, but thought you would find it interesting.... maybe.... :B
