Smart Tote by Thetford is therre better?

We have a Thetford Smart Tote 12 gallon tank. It works great for carrying when we travel. Currently, we also use it when camping locally. Thinking about what I would replace it with. Maybe something bigger for the home campground use, but really like this size for traveling.

Anybody have thoughts and experiences with the larger pull behind units?
Size, options, ease of use? Would you buy the same unit again? What to stay away from. Experiences.

Decided to look into a bigger size for the local use, to not wear out the 12 gallon unit.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts.
  • Barker 42 ordered and should arrive this week. Thank you all for the advice. Its nice to draw on others experience.
  • I appreciate all the thoughts.

That Barker 42 gallon portable waste tank with the ability to put on rubber tires does look nice. There are a number of Thetford and Barker models in the camp ground. I'll search for deals and prices.

    Thanks again.
  • We have a 25 gal. Tote n Stor. Wish I'd gotten a Thetford or Barker. Not much of anything to brag about it except the price. It does the job, though I hate the handle.

The only one better is a larger Thetford Smart Tote although the Barker aficionados might beg to differ. :)

I decided to get the biggest Thetford LX tank that there was (35 gallon) when it was on sale ($199) because I wanted something that could pretty much empty any of my holding tanks. Not interested in doing small back-forth trips.

When it goes with me it is in the bed of the truck, although I have a ladder-mounted bike rack that could also do the trick if the bikes are not going.

I like the Thetford better than the Barker because it has a decent colour, is nice and rigged and has good features, tows well on 4 wheels, and because Barkers tend to be more popular.
  • Howdy!

Use a "Barker tote" 32 gallon with wheels and also has a side waist gate valve just like the RV has to dump it, so you don't have to raise it. Works great.

  • I have the Thetford smart tote 27 gal. I like that it has 4 wheels and a bobber gauge. The sewer hose contained on it is very nice. It seems very durable. I've had it for years. Towed it many, many miles to the dump stations. Overall awesome. The one thing that bugs me is the bottom back when dumping. To the right and left of the sewer hose does not drain as easily. I kind of rock it forward and back. Not a major issue. I would still choose this one again. Just something for you to think about. Good luck.
  • I have a Smart Tote 35 gallon with two wheels. It's okay for home but it gets leakage out of the drain tube moving it around, not much but any is to much.

I originally bought it to empty the tank in the hills then put it in my pickup and empty it when in town. Not sure I want to, now.All the bouncing around could make a mess.I haven't tried it yet but a grey tank drill is in order.
