So how shot is my roof?

Instructions or not... mine will never be screwed direct to the roof...

The leak risk is way too high. :E Unbelievable actually...

I have never known them to not come with the brackets in the max-air brand, but I am sure these brackets were the same brackets that have come with the dozen or so max air covers I have bought over the years, they wouldn’t be common to anything else with the elongated holes for the carriage bolts and stiffener stamping in the L part of the bracket… I can’t speak to any other brand though…

I have seen some max-air in the clearance section missing the brackets (most likely a returned item)… I don’t think you can buy just the brackets…

It would only be a guess but with a predrilled hole in the bracket sized and that aligns with the existing vent screws I can see this happening… what I can’t see is someone drilling new holes anywhere without reading the installation instructions first…




EDIT: By gosh they do have the mounting kit available..

Always included with the MaxxAir Vent covers, now offered as a stand-alone product. Mounts to the vent side wall to avoid drilling holes in your roof. Stainless steel and aluminum. Not to be used on Fan/Mate® or Turbo/Maxx® models.

You might think that and the instructions clearly show mounting them to the rim of the vent, but I just don’t know about that…

I bought a trailer to sell that had 3 max air covers already installed about 5 years earlier… when I pulled the covers to clean the inside I noticed they were mounted directly to the roof…

There were no new holes drilled in the roof… the front and rear existing vent screws were removed on each side and sealer put down under the L bracket and the existing screws reinstalled with more sealer and the carriage bolts fit the cover perfectly…

All the screws were tight and secure as were the brackets… there were no leaks and no mess… the guy that bought it had it a long time afterword and to my knowledge had no problems with the covers or leaks…

Not recommending doing it this way but it’s apparently not the end all either…

as I pointed out many posts ago, the L brackets used to not be standard with the covers, they were an extra minimal cost. It does not surprise me that people have found them screwed down directly to the roof which I doubt anybody would do if the brackets came with their covers.
I should add that this applies only to the types of covers that I bought/installed. the brackets might have been supplied by other companies.

If this is the kit you are talking about, it is for installation of the vent itself and not the vent cover like we are discussing here. In addition, I posted a picture of the MaxxAir vent cover that I use and was talking about. Those vents covers, as you found out, do come complete with all mounting brackets and screws that are necessary.

I cannot imagine Camco would market a vent cover that requires drilling into the RV roof for installation. That would be pretty stupid in my opinion.

I googled camco covers and found out that they even sell a mounting kit with a bunch of screws and some putty tape or some such. :)
one maxaire I found showed that it came with mounting hardware.
