Some really interesting replies. As far as the repair goes, sounds like epoxy is the way to go. The awning will cover it anyway.
As for my neighbor, he and his wife were my wife's grandparents neighbors, circa 1960's, here before we moved into the house. So we inherited him. He's retired Navy. Served during WWII. All his boys are military or retired military. Believe me, there's nothing but integrity among them. We share the same, general, worldview on life and politics. We get along great. The bb gun was just an isolated mishap and I'm treating as that. Thanks for all the suggestions.
