I really hate it when stuff that I work hard for to be able to afford, with my hard earned money, gets screwed up by some careless bungler, no matter how well-meaning or whatever excuse they have.
Everybody has an excuse, and everybody means well, as long as they don't have to pay for the consequences to their actions.
I would hand him the bill. If he doesn't pay it, put a lien on his house.
