Few 3.5 Ecoboosts have the 3.73. 3.55 is best I can find, and fewer still have more than a 7050lb GVWR package. Also I tow in the mountains a lot, and even though the EB has more power higher. I don't worry about goin up. I care more about coming down. the V6 has less braking than the V8.
In the newer 6 and 8 speed transmissions that low axle ratio isn't as important as it used to be. I'm not sure what the difference would be in compression braking in the V6 versus the V8. That would be an interesting comparison to see.
This 3.5L EB vs 5.0L V8 Torque Curve Dyno Comparison is on MY 2011 trucks, but I think the graphs tell it all. The EB hits max torque waaayyyy earlier than the 5.0 and achieves overall higher torque and HP numbers. Additionally at 2900RPM the EB was making 100 lbs-ft more torque than the 5.0 and continued to make more torque past 5,000RPM than the maximum reached at any point by the 5.0.
You're a long time member here so I know you're up on all the specs and towing needs. It's just curious because I've had similar discussions with an acquaintance at my church. Unfortunately he fell into the old salesman baloney that 'you gotta have a V8 if you wanna tow a trailer'. Since buying the truck he got a great deal on a TT, the problem is it's right at (or maybe over) the truck's max rating and he's scared towing it. I guess the other bit of old salesman baloney he bought is that he was told the truck can tow 11,500 lbs. What he failed to read, or the salesman omitted telling him, was that rating is for the EB and all the MAX towing packages. I'm plannig to go help him make sure his setup is correct at which time I intend to confirm the exact towing specs of his truck. My guess is I'll find his tow ratings are in the 9,000lbs or less range. The truck didn't even come with the OEM trailer brake controller, and while I'm not familiar with Ford towing options, I'll bet the lack of that controller is probably coupled with lower GVWR and GCWR ratings.
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw out those dyno numbers for general consumption.
