We don't like a lot of light when out dry camping. We bought some cheap solar lights that we stick in the ground near whatever objects we might trip over at night. I have two that I have attached magnets too and stick them on the sides of the 5'er steps. The others we just place out around the site near a rock or something that sticks up that we wouldn't see when its dark out and need to make our way back to the 5'er. The solar lights don't put out much light like a lantern or flashlight but give just enough to enhance the area.
Only way you could read with one is to have it right next to the book you're reading.
The hangings ones would do an okay job for a few feet around the awning but I doubt they would light up much 10' away if they were the only light. Any solar light is going to do it's job which is to create a subdued light in a small area.
