My reason for considering having a charge controller between the truck and the camper is because I want to charge my AGM batteries with a charger that is specifically designed for AGM batteries and is tied directly to them instead of 30+ feet of wire from the alternator on the truck and mixed with the starter batteries.
That's why I put in the charge controller. It is a DuoCharge from Balmar, made for exactly this purpose. You can set the DuoCharge charging parameters for AGM or other chemistries, also do custom settings. It will do a correct bulk-absorption-float charge (limited to 30 amps). But it will not help if the voltage drop on the way to the camper is large.
There are DC - DC chargers that will fully charge the house batteries even if the voltage into the charger is 10V or less. They do this by up conversion, but this will draw more amps, leading to further voltage drop in the wiring so it will not help in the usual truck/camper case (charge wiring too small).
