Modern (anything from the past 10 years or so) vehicle charging system do NOT put out as much voltage as the older ones or at least they do not for very long. The voltage from the alternator is controlled by the PCM. The algorithms used are designed to put the MINIMUM amount of energy back into the starting battery required to re-start the vehicle.
Within 5-15 minutes after starting the voltage will be regulated down to <14V, maybe even <13.5V.
