Solar Panels??

I would like to know what users look for in a solar panel, I am thinking about getting one but I am not sure what the out put should be. It would be used for charging my 12 v battery when we go off grid camping. What kind of voltage/current rating would be the best. I work for a company that makes solar panels that are on a flexible film so mounting isnt an issue.
  • First, I look for one that fits on the top of the limited landscape of a Truck Camper's roof.

    Don't go too large if you are going to tilt them, due to Wind, Snow Load and getting up on a small roof to work around them and not fall off the roof.

    Do a Demand survey of what your needs are, to match the Solar/Batteries to your needs.

    Lots of good Solar and Solar information from these fellow RV.net posters;

  • Hi,

    Solar panels are a solid state device. I'd look for the best price per installed watt.

    Here is a simple flow chart.

    Budget-->Energy Audit-->Battery bank size-->number of watts-->PWM or MPPT.
    A rule of thumb is between 60 and 150 watts of panels per 100 amp-hours of storage. The smaller the battery bank the high the wattage needed (per 100 amp-hours). Here is a link to the rather special spreadsheet which includes an energy audit, that N8GS has created to help size solar battery charging systems!

  • Ken, the best you should do is a SEARCH , there's 50 + posting on your question. JMO
  • I find that my 160 watt solar panel keeps my 2 AGM 12volt batteries fully charged.
