Once you get to the chassis cab models, they detune the gasoline and diesel engines but they give you more axle ratio choices. I always wonder if the less aggressive tune was applied to a pickup, if it would get better mileage. Deactivating some of the cylinders only happens while in PTO use and not while driving in a chassis cab, so I don't think you could ever get a true comparison without too many variables.
I currently am pricing the Rams and Fords and also find Ford is more expensive. Ram is pushing some good rebates right now on existing stock which makes it hard to resist if you find one you like. Be aware that the base prices on Rams vary wildly. Not only do they change per production run, but also per dealer based on volume. The latter I found strange since Ford usually gives the dealer more under the table kick backs and keeps the MSRP's more consistent.
