Something Else to Obsess Over

I put this marine hatch cover in my water tank several years ago after running a screw into the side, and wanting to fix it from the inside rather than removing the tank. I look inside the tank at least a few times a year, and there’s usually sediment in the bottom like this. I open the drain valve, and just rinse it out with water. I see some surprisingly big solids in there occasionally too. Nothing alive or formerly living though, thank goodness. :W

Before rinsing. Rust, I think (It’s good for ya!)

After rinsing (the dark spots are under the tank)

What’s in your tank? :B

:):)
  • Filter? Maybe so.

Oh well, as long as there’s nothing made of meat in there, it’s good enough for coffee, cooking and showers.

As the Texas Ranger, LaBoeuf In True Grit said: “I’ve seen the time I’ve drunk out of a filthy hoofprint, and I was glad to get it.” :B

That looks a lot like iron. And the solids are probably calcium. Use a filter when adding water, and drain the tank when you are not using it. Then add a 1/2 cup of bleach and refill the tank.
  • Few months ago I parted 19 yo Lance and reused interior for Sprinter conversion.
Water tank was clean. We had excelent water when in California and in Las Vegas I filled the tank from water softener pipes.
Gray and black tanks had residue sticking to the walls. I had to cut them shorter and when the residue dried -it flake off, but would not come off even with water flush.
  • Unless your water is heavily chlorinated - all sorts of things come with our clean drinking water. In my area, there's a lot of tannins in the water (looks like rust, but it's simply "color") and wherever there's water, there will be pseudomonas bacteria (if the inside feels "slimy" - that's pseudomonas. It's everywhere; and pretty much harmless unless you scrape that slime and eat it....
  • Mine probably looks like that inside too. LOL

the only water that I've put in my tank is from our well and I haven't used a filter.

Heaven only knows what the previous owned put in there. :E
  • Seems like you need to use a filter when you are filling your tank. :D I can see into my tank pretty well although I don’t have a hatch like yours. Mine seems clear.
