I place an ice cube, or equivalent, in a bowl in the freezer as a tattle tale in case the thing happens to quit freezing while it is sitting unmonitored. If I come back to a shallow flat ice slug in the bottom of the bowl, I know what happened. Otherwise, I think your plan is a good one.
