I replace the spare at the same time I replace all of the tires. 5 years here in AZ.
I do save some money by getting a discount tire brand tire for the spare. It costs about half of what my Michelin XPS RIBS do. And since I have never needed a spare since I started running them in 2006, if I ever did it would just be until I could get another Michelin,,, I consider that an acceptable risk/reward ratio.
