Just a little encouragement, u should have no problem in working on that engine. It's one of the easiest I have ever turned a wrench on. Which by the way is not often... Tuff as nails and dead reliable. I have owned 2 gm 6.0 trucks thus far and have been very happy with both! Good luck and keep us posted.
Well, as far as keeping folks posted, so far all I did was put in a new fuel filter, but that seems to have cleared up most of the problem, but not all of it.
I can go up the same hills as before (recent trip) and no snapping/banging now. But I can still get that if I floor it from a standing start such as from a traffic light at the bottom of a hill and it goes to 5 thousand revs and starts snapping with the engine light flashing until I ease off the gas a bit :)
I am due, based on the driver's manual and the mileage on the truck, for new spark plugs. I figure from what I am getting that this is on schedule, but that most of my problem was that fuel filter which was OEM at 150k and I should have been on my third one! Of course I will get new wires for the new plugs and try to change them myself when I get to that.
The immediate crisis is over though. Lesson is- don't forget the fuel filter! It is such an easy change out too. Can't think why I never did that till now since I am a fanatic about most things like that. :(
