Since you probably can't win either way, I think it's a good idea and you should go ahead a do what works best for you.
I hear ya, can't please everyone! I have actually been looking for lights that would not bother my camping neighbors. The cool thing about the second style lights I posted are that they are two-way with your choice of a bright white light or just an amber "night light." Plus the cover guides the light down, not straight ahead.
