Spinoff: Riding while driving

So how many have actually ridden in the TC while on the road?

I've wondered this as I've debated getting the truck rear window replaced with a slider so the wife and/or dog can pass thru if they so desire. I know it's legal, just seems iffy to me.
  • My dog rides back in my camper throughout the year. He has no problems at all.
  • I can't imagine what it would be like back there myself. I've ridden in truck beds as a kid but that's a bit different IMO.

The ride is probably alot better with the truck Camper setup as compared with a towed trailer.

Thats would not be my cup of tea riding in the towed trailers. Wife tried that once and scared the H@@@ out of her...

I think different states have different laws about this... I remember reading about one state that required a live intercom to make it legal.

My sister had plans to carry their big dog in the fifth wheel on trips. They stopped after 50 miles on the maiden trip and their dog was really in bad shape. To this day they can't drag that dog inside their 5th wheel...

    Not for me

  • I also did as a kid. But we didn't have seat belts, padded dashes or air bags in the cars either.

Riding in RV's these days (MH's excluded) is just plain dangerous. Vehicles are more powerful, highways are nicer so speeds are greater. Vehicles have evolved with safety equipment for these times. Campers are still flimsy little wooden boxes that disintegrate on impact.

No one will ever ride in my camper. Especially my dog!!!! :B
  • As a child/ teenager I remember riding in the back of the TC. There was a slide window that was removed and a type of air bag filled in the gap between truck and camper. It allowed us to climb/pass things through as well as stop any rain or wind.

Even though some provinces and states allow this I don't think, no, I know I would not have passengers in the back.

There are other issues than an accidents, such as fire, that would make it questionable for this to be allowed.
  • I've certainly never DRIVEN any truck, while riding in the camper! :e

I have, however, ridden in the camper, while mom or pop drove the truck, many, many times, as a kid, many years ago. :) I used to ride in the overcab bed, looking out the front window. Going under bridges felt a bit scary from up there!

I was also small enough to crawl back and forth from cab to camper, through the 2 sliding windows, which we dubbed the 'snake-through'. Don't think I could fit through very many double sets of sliding windows these days!
  • Years ago before many extended cabs and crew cabs were on the road lots people used to ride in TCs. Mom, pop and 4 kids were not comfortable is a small truck cab. Our neighbor's kids would ride in the cab over looking out the window. A little scary. I know it is legal. We had a slider window in our TC & PU and only did it when several people were going along. With all the crew cabs and extended cabs on the road anymore doesn't seem like it would be necessary to ride back there.
