Storing a jayco 23b or other camper/ lowering of tire air

Hi I just recently purchased a used 2004 Jayco 23b. I am hoping to store it in my in laws barn. The problem I have is that on jayco's website it says the height of the unit is 115 inches and from measuring the trailer it appears to be closer to 114. My in laws barn door height is 113 inches. So I really would like to get it in there. The air conditioner is the main problem. Has anybody tried to lower tire pressure to get there trailer into storage? If so how low have you gone on air pressure? Or another thought I had was to buy smaller rims and tires just for putting it into storage. Any thoughts? Thanks

  • Another couple options... if you can locate some wheels, without tires on them, you can just run it in on the steel wheels. It will work fine since its a nice level solid approach. In the spring after you pull it out you could install your original wheels and tires. the Jaycos sit pretty low, the only thing that might give you issues with this is how low your plumbing is on your trailer.
Another option might be removing your wheels and placing the drums on some of those wheel dollies used for moving vehicles around on , the ones with 4 swiveling casters like http://www.car-dolly.com/standard. It may be more work than you care to do though.
  • AC cover is just a couple of screws, lifts right up. Good idea! If you can gain what you need, easier than messing with the tires
  • Thanks for the responses. I had not thought about the air conditioner cover but that is a good idea. Has anybody had experience taking off the cover? is it pretty easy? In regards to damaging the sidewalls I hadn't thought of that either. My plan would be to get most of the camper under, and then right before the air conditioner has to go through deflate the tires and then once I got passed the air conditioner I would air up the tires again and leave them aired up for storage. The barn floor and entrance is level concrete so the digging up around the entrance wouldn't work.

I'm pretty sure that I will remember to do the same things when getting out it. I tend to overthink things so when it would come to getting it out. My guess is I will be thinking about getting it for a while in advance.

I think I figured out to that getting different rims and wheels will not work. I saw that there were 8 inch rims with the same bolt pattern, but the probably is the circle in the middle will be to small to mount on the trailer.
  • Here's a thought, are you going to remember how you got it in there originally? I have visions that in six months or more you decide to take off for a camping trip and rip off your ac unit getting it out of the barn.

try taking the cover off the A/C unit, you might get the 1" your looking for. Also, what kind of ground is your inlaws barn entrance? maybe you can trench out the ground.

  • I started to say probably ok to do it, but as I think about it, might damage the sidewalls. If you decide to do it, make sure you air them up again for storage.
