^ Ram needs to get that 8 speed going.....at least their 6 speeds are decent unilke the 2nd and 3rd gen truck’s 47-48res. But why they always gotta be the last to have a good trans? They were the leaders with the 8HPs a few years ago and now s ucking hind teat again in the trans dept.
The Ram 8 speed is a ZF. Existing transmissions can handle big HP (Demon) but not the huge low RPM torque today's diesels are putting out. They will have to come up with something if Ford and GM both go with more gears.
I would think it's more the weight they are expected to handle, not the low end torque. Put 35K behind a Demon (with no tongue weight, like those "tow the space shuttle" PR stunts), put it to the floor, and the trans might not be so happy anymore.
Or maybe it would be fine. They are only putting the ZF8HP75 in the gas HD trucks from what I read, and its not even the stoutest version. They make ZF8HP90's and 95's that are even stronger for the Trackhawks and Hellcats.
It has everything to do with SAE repeated hill starts in forward and reverse.
The AISIN IS A True MD trans not sure of its weight but I’m sure it’s no lightweight.
