There are a number of different chip manufacturers for the 7.3. I chose to use the D-P Tuner F-5 unit. They have a couple of more modern, expensive tuners with the same programs.
When new, my F250 crewcab would just chirp a tire. Now, I can light the rear tires up. If I hit it at 20 mph, I can look in the rear view mirror and see two black streaks. 60-80 mph is in 4 seconds flat--strong passing gear. That's an 80 hp econo tune, which uses John Woods' great transmission programs.
For towing up to 13,000 lbs., you use a 60 hp tow mode. It feels like the 80 hp mode, but the transmission program shifts at slightly higher rpms.
My tuner was just over $300. I can buy any of 140+ specialized tunes for about $50 each--up to 14 programs.
With the 60 hp tow mode, it's pulling my new 12K fifth wheel easily. The service level of D-P is excellent, and they're simply one of the best turners for the 7.3--far better than Hypertech or Superchip.
When towing heavy loads, any 7.3 diesel requires a set of three gauges. Amazon is the best place to get them and a custom pillar mount for $304. Any chipped truck must be driven by the pyrometer. If approaching 1200 degrees, you've got to either slow down or stop and cool the engine. It's also nice to have a an accurate tranny temperature. Push the speeds up, and you can cook your tranny.
I put a TruCool tranny cooler on my truck for less than $150. It's the best insurance anyone can do to protect their $3500-4500 transmission.
