Surge Protector?

Hi HarmsWay,

I use a Sola Basic which offers three levels of boost (at 110, 100, and 90 volts) and one level of buck (135 volts). I use an add on surge device which offers much more protection than the PD, SG, or Hughes.

I do manually check voltage under load, and polarity before I plug in the RV. If that shows lots of voltage drop I add the Sola to the power path. I do lock it down enough to prevent casual theft, but in these days of battery powered cut off wheels it would not stop a determined thief.

The Sola units are sold in Mexico, so to get one you need to have a friend who will purchase and transport it for you (or make a Mexico trip). http://www.isbmex.com/productos/corrector-de-voltaje-8-y-4-kva

The Hughes offers the same level of surge protect as the PD. I don't know if the SG unit is more capable, but I doubt it.

nah, just wait for the first "problem" that costs a bunch of $$$. then buy one as hind sight is 20/20.

Do you use one of those units? They seem quite large so I assume you keep it outside. Any issues wrt theft or weather?

To date I have only used a NCVT and a multimeter to make sure the line voltage and plug are correctly wired before plugging in. We don't plug in often. I have considered buying a nice surge protector and certainly will when we get a new unit. Maybe I should just bite the bullet now....

you want a multi-function surge protector. $250 and up. not the $90 special.

When using hookups we always use our Progressive Industries EMS. Cheap Insurance.

When hooked up in parks, I always use my Progressive Dynamics surge protector.

I drive an 'A', not a TC, but my Progressive Industries EMC has saved my bacon on several occasions. In one campground, the pedestal had been wired bas ackwards! And when my on-board generator voltage regulator failed and the generator was putting out 150volts, the EMC save all of the electrical items in the rig.

So..I recommend that you MUST have a means to protect your rig and its electrical contents.
